Yanic Wildschut says staying with Exeter City was an easy decision

Yanic Wildschut said it was an easy decision for him to commit to Exeter City for the 2024/25 season. The 32-year-old Surinamese international initially joined the Grecians on a short-term contract shortly after the summer transfer window closed, but such was his form and contribution, that it was extended until the end of the season.

Despite not featuring in the final two matches of the campaign, manager Gary Caldwell said that the Dutch-born flier had been offered fresh terms and he becomes the first player to commit to the Grecians since the season finished.

“It was a very easy decision for me to make,” Wildschut said on signing the new deal. “I’ve really enjoyed my time here, especially the second half of this season where we have been doing really well and I can’t wait to continue this next season.

“I’m really happy to be staying another year. My son says he doesn’t want us to leave until the end of primary school! So I don’t think Exeter will get rid of me that easily. My family really enjoy it here and it’s a nice place to live. Football is the most important thing but the family like it so that’s a plus.

“Gary said to me that I have to stay! We spoke about my role as a player and what I can do on and off the pitch and helping the young players. He has always been good to me - from when I was at Wigan to here - and I hold him in really high regard. I will always be thankful for the opportunities he has given me. I can’t wait for next season with a full pre-season under my belt and I can get going from the beginning.”

Caldwell said after the Grecians’ season-ending 2-1 defeat at home to Oxford United that he will be talking with his out of contract players the following day, although some decisions have already been made at St James Park.

Academy graduates Alex Hartridge and Harry Kite are both leaving Devon, while it is known that defender Zak Jules has been offered an extended contract to stay over an above the one-year extension City wish to trigger.

Further announcements are expected soon with Caldwell keep to keep the majority of his squad together after a superb second half of the season which saw the Grecians climb away from relegation danger to finish the campaign in 13th place.
