A popular Yarm barber shop is in the running for one of the country's leading accolades.

Ultimate Grooming has been shortlisted for the finals of Barbershop/Grooming Salon of the Year at HJ's British Hairdressing Business Awards 2024. Considered the pinnacle business event representing hairdressing, Anthony Andrew, owner of the Yarm Road shop, said he is thrilled to be chosen as a finalist and will be heading to London's Park Plaza for the glittering ceremony in July.

He said: "This is a really prestigious award. We have won lots of awards before, but not this. I have entered this before and didn't even get an email back, so this time to be chosen as finalists is great. Seeing how well the salon's been embraced has been incredible. All those hours of planning and building the business have really paid off and getting recognised feels amazing.

"With such fierce competition, just making it to the finals feels like a win already. We've got our fingers crossed for the big prize – winning would be a total game-changer."

Anthony launched his salon in 2016 and has trained up all of his seven staff to ensure each customer is happy with their haircut. Ultimate Grooming not only offers hair cutting, but also a large range of face and beard care treatment. It also runs specialist groom packages for grooms and their groomsmen on wedding days.

Although Anthony, 36, is in charge of haircuts, it is his partner, and soon-to-be wife, Sarah Kinnie, 33, who is in charge of the smooth running of the business. As well as preparing to tie the knot, the pair have also moved house and taken possession of the keys to new premises in Darlington's Haughton Le Skerne where they plan to launch their new branch of Ultimate Grooming in July.

Jayne Lewis-Orr, executive director of the British Hairdressing Business Awards, said: "The awards celebrate the talented and passionate businesses and individuals who contribute to the greatness of British hairdressing. Once again, our judging panel faced an outstanding group of candidates. Being nominated in this category requires the finalist to showcase their ability to build an amazing business concept, with a superb level of customer loyalty. Ultimate Grooming's nomination speaks volumes about their entrepreneurial flair and dedication to success."
