Showtime’s hit series Yellowjackets finished its dramatic second season on Friday, 26 May, no doubt leaving some viewers to wonder if the show would be back for a third outing.

The drama, which airs on Paramount+ in the UK, follows a group of characters over two periods: one in 1996 when they were left fighting to survive in the wilderness for 19 months, and the other in 2021 as the characters continue to deal with the consequences of their actions 25 years after their rescue.

Yellowjackets’ second season has seen tensions continue to rise between the group in both time periods, with the finale revealing a shocking death.

The good news is that the drama has indeed been renewed for a third season, and the show was actually given an early renewal before season 2 even premiered.

In December 2022 it was announced that the show was a priority for Showtime, and so had been renewed to show the company’s “commitment” to the story.

Chris McCarthy, who is President and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks, shared a statement alongside the renewal announcement.

He said: “With Yellowjackets’ runaway success in season one and the pent-up anticipation for season two, we wanted to maximize the momentum by fast tracking season three now.

“The show’s ambition is only exceeded by its execution, and I thank the incredible creative team behind it, including Ashley, Bart, Jonathan, eOne and the Showtime team, for turning this into such a success.”

McCarthy added the renewal demonstrated Showtime’s belief that Yellowjackets has the “ability to continue to grow as well as how it fits clearly within a Showtime brand.”

While season 1 proved a huge critical success, season 2 has not been received with quite the same positive reactions, with the finale being called a “crushing disappointment” by Forbes on one hand, and “deliciously nauseating” by GamesRadar on the other.

Given the second season ends with one character’s shocking demise, it seems there are still a lot of unanswered questions to be addressed in season 3.

Yellowjackets is available to watch on Paramount+ in the UK and on Showtime in the US.
