Melanie Lynskey has addressed a horrifying theory about her character Shauna's baby in Yellowjackets season two.

Exclusively catching up with Digital Spy as season 2 nears its climax, Lynskey (who splits the role with Sophie Nélisse) reflected on young Shauna's traumatic labour scenes from episode 6 of the latest season. Tragically, her baby boy does not survive.

In the same episode, Shauna has a bleak nightmare where her fellow Yellowjackets steal the baby to eat – although it has been confirmed that this won't happen in the show.

"I think that that scene really shows how loose her grasp is on reality, and how difficult things are really getting for her. And just the horror of what she's going through. Her brain is just losing it," Lynskey said.

Asked whether this particular scene acts as a foreshadowing, Lynskey categorically ruled it out, although confirmed there is "more cannibalism" on the horizon.

"I don't hear a lot of fan theories. I would have to say the thing about eating the baby [is the craziest], because I have been asked that," she added. "To me, that is pretty crazy."

Lynskey also reflected on the impact that young Shauna's horrific experiences had on her later life.

"It's such a huge part of their history, and it's manifested in so many different ways," she added. "I think she decided after that that she would never be in that situation again.

"She never wanted to have a child. She did not want to be a mother. She didn't even want to be pregnant again, just from the trauma of it.

"And then, you know, she was married, and, at a certain point in her relationship, she didn't know the things that Jeff knew, you know? She didn't think he knew anything.

"So I think it was also partly because she couldn't keep defending her decision to not have a child, so she decided, you know, 'I will have a child with him,'" Lynskey elaborated.

"She has had a lot of questions about how good she is at being a mother – you know, not really having wanted to do that, and the fact that the whole situation just brings up a lot of grief, I think, which is something she likes to feel in general."

Yellowjackets season 2 airs on Showtime in the US and Paramount+ in the UK.
