Yorkshire mum accosts DJ Chris Evans in the street and tells him not to panic

A mother "accosted" Chris Evans in a bid to get him to play her daughter's latest hit single on his breakfast show.

Abigail Yates embarked on a 170-mile journey from Broomhill, Sheffield to London on Wednesday [3 April], with the aim of surprising the Virgin Radio DJ as he exited his recording studio. The 47-year-old gym owner approached Evans, praising her daughter, Chanel Yates, 24, for her singing talent and requested him to feature her new track on his show.

The former BBC Radio 2 DJ informed Abigail that he was heading to a meeting but suggested she leave her daughter's details in an envelope and send it to his hotel. The following morning, to the astonishment of both Abigail and Chanel, her new song Studio Apartment was broadcast on his show.

Evans commented on his show: "A mum accosted me in the street yesterday. She said, 'I'm accosting you, I'm accosting you, but don't panic, she said, I'm not a weirdo."

"I said 'you could've fooled me! She clearly wasn't, as a weirdo wouldn't say that. All she wanted to do was tell me how great her daughter was at singing, could we play a song on the show? Her name's Abi, her daughter's called Chanel."

"We can't just play people's songs on the show, otherwise we'd have to do that all the time and there'd be loads of people waiting for us outside the building every day, because they'd then know that we did that, but she is really good, and her name is Chanel Yates. We'll play a bit of it - how good is this? ".

Chanel said that her mother Abigail, a "superfan" of Chris Evans, had declared: "Enough is enough, I want him to play your song. And so she set off." Abigail, who has been striving for three years to get the celebrated DJ to play her daughter's music, confidently claimed: "I'm going to meet him. I'm going to manifest it."

Chanel, 24, said that her mum "knows he comes to work on his bike" but asserted she was not a "weirdo". She stated: "You don't ask, you don't get."

Decades-long fan of the Chris Evans' show and daily listener, Abigail revealed: "I just could not believe it. I've been following [Chris Evans] for 30 years. It's made my life."

After playing a snippet of Chanel's song, Evans acknowledged: "She's not a weirdo, but she's a mum who dearly loves her daughter, her very, very talented daughter. How good was that? ".

Upon hearing her song being broadcast, Chanel, also from Broomhill but currently working at a gym in London, expressed her surprise, stating: "I screamed a little bit when I found out the news."
