You Season 4 - Part 2 review: Joe Goldberg goes off the deep end as London tale continues

When we left Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) in You season 4 part 1, the love-addicted serial killer had gone from hunter to hunted as the Eat The Rich killer had him in his crosshairs.

With part two's arrival, it's clear that said killer, Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers), isn't going anywhere. In fact, he's breathing down Joe's neck more than ever before – and has more tasks for him to complete under the agreement he keep Joe's true identity a secret.

It's quite the conundrum he's in, seeing as Joe's new life as "College Professor Jonathan Moore" has offered him a way out of his previous murderous lifestyle. Heck, it's even given him a girlfriend with a dark background on par with his.

But there are just certain threads that Joe just can't help but keep pulling at, and soon he becomes a pawn in a much bigger game – the run for London Mayor (yes, really).

Unlike part one, it's difficult to navigate what happens in part two without some major spoiler territory (but don't worry, we're playing nice here).

The trailer for part two gave away one major secret – very-dead ex-wife Love (Victoria Pedretti) is back, though you'll have to wait to find out how exactly that comes to pass.

What we can say is You Season 4 Part 2 fully goes off the deep end when it comes to Joe and his character development. Super sleuths of TikTok have largely figured out some of the major plot points already, based purely on the five episodes already delivered alone. But unlike part one, which deviates from its original format in an interesting way, part two almost tries to correct itself back to what we know to the point it completely derails this bizarre crazy train.

You has always erred on the verge of ridiculousness, and its self-awareness has been part of its fun, but part two seems to take that ball and run with it a bit too far.

For every genuinely great twist the show delivers (and to be fair, there are many in this new batch of five episodes), there's always something so nonsensical it causes the scales of how good the episodes actually are to tip the other way.

There are certain story beats that bash you over the head harder than Joe ever could with pop songs containing on-the-nose lyrics that make you groan. There's plot holes so big you would call the council on them to be filled in and, most importantly, at some point it stops being so enjoyable anymore.

However, Badgley and Speleers are one hell of an entertaining dynamic on screen, even more so than any of Joe's previous love interests – including Kate (Charlotte Ritchie), who is given a bit more of a story plot to play with this time around, but maybe not quite enough needed to have us fully invested in Kate and Joe's relationship.

Greg Kinnear makes a surprise appearance as Kate's uber-rich and controlling dad, and while he brings quite the twist with him, adds a little too much fuel to an already out-of-control fire as the season tries to wind up several plot lines already in play.

With The Elite Gang getting relegated more and more to the sidelines, it's almost a shame that there's so much interesting development happening away from our screens. When she's given a moment, Tilly Keeper absolutely shines as Lady Phoebe, who seems to be the only one with any kind of conscience in the upper echelons of society. Lukas Gage also delivers as her out-for-himself boyfriend Adam.

But the others we spent five hours getting to know? Pretty sure they're not given a single line of dialogue, and practically no screen time.

Whether this is the end of Joe as we know it, or if a You season five ever materialises, we're yet to find out. But this does feel like a somewhat finite ending to a story that shouldn't have lasted as long as it has.
