Young Mum Becomes Facebook Sensation After Asking Friends, 'Who is David Cameron?'

A young mum became an unwitting Facebook sensation - after asking her online friends who David Cameron is.

Devon Boon, 21, was left baffled by the number of posts on her Facebook newsfeed about David Cameron, who she'd never heard of.

She asked the questions to her friends online because the last she heard about UK politics, Tony Blair was Prime Minister.

Devon didn't vote because she doesn't know the difference between Labour and Conservative and thought you had to pay to vote.

Devon, from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, wrote a status asking: 'Who's David Cameron and why do people keep posting about him?'

Her post was met with incredulous comments from Facebook friends, who were convinced it was a prank.

One read: 'Please tell me your joking?'.  But the unapologetic mum replied: 'No lol? I would Google it but my phones slow.'

Devon, who gave birth to son Freddie in August last year, also posted a comment referring to Osama bin Laden as a prime minister and mistaking Barack Obama for a terrorist.

She said: 'I don't know any politicians and I couldn't name any political parties. I had a conversation with my cousin about someone called David Cameron being all over Facebook and she didn't know who he was either, so I decided to post a status about it.

'I don't watch the news or read the newspapers so I'd never heard of him until people started talking about him last week. I thought he must be a celebrity or something.'

After numerous friends explained who he was, Devon went on to ask why some were referring to David Cameron as an MP and not a PM.

When one friend enlightened her with the fact that this stood for 'Member of Parliament', she asked why they weren't then called 'MOPs'.

She later referred to Barack Obama as a terrorist, but argues that she 'got him and bin Laden the wrong way round'.

But Devon – who worked as a customer advisor at an insurance company prior to going on maternity leave – defends her ignorance and says schools are to blame.

She said: 'The last I heard, Tony Blair was the Prime Minister. But I don't think it's my fault. I don't watch the news and we didn't get taught about politics in school so why should I be expected to know these things?

'They should teach you about the government and politics and mortgages at school. Instead, they teach you about the parts of a leaf and how flowers reproduce which no-one is ever going to need to know.

'At home I usually just have CBeebies on TV for Freddie and sometimes I'll watch Hollyoaks. I find the news too depressing.'

Although she was aware of an election earlier this month, Devon didn't show an interest and has never voted herself.

She said: 'I wouldn't have a clue what to do if someone told me to go and vote. I actually thought you had to pay to vote. I think my mum and dad always vote but they said my paper was sent to their house and they forgot to pass it on.

'I don't think I'm the only young person in this position. Loads of my friends didn't vote and didn't know about David Cameron either. He's obviously not doing enough to get our attention.'
