It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 20 years since Cassie (Camryn Grimes) died on The Young and the Restless. For those who need a brief refresher, back in 2005, 14-year-old Cassie was going through a rebellious phase and Sharon (Sharon Case) and Nick (Joshua Morrow) were beside themselves trying to figure out what happened to their sweet little girl.

Then one night, Cassie lied to her parents and said she was going to see a movie. Instead, she went to a party with older teens, and that’s where she came across a drunken Daniel (Michael Graziadei). She had a huge crush on him at the time, and thinking she was helping him, she put him in a car in an attempt to drive him home, despite not having a driver's license. One thing led to another and she lost control of the vehicle, getting into an accident that wound up killing her, but leaving Daniel with only a few injuries.

Naturally, because he was older and had been drinking, Sharon and Nick assumed Daniel was at fault and blamed him for the death of their daughter. However, the truth eventually came out that he wasn’t driving, though he still felt pretty guilty for Cassie’s death.

Fast forward to the present, and during Joshua Morrow’s anniversary episode, viewers were reminded of the loss of Cassie. Then in The Young and the Restless episode airing on July 10, Sharon takes a walk down memory lane and looks at a scrapbook dedicated to her late child.

As Sharon combs through the book, she’s interrupted by Daniel’s daughter Lucy (Lily Brooks O’Briant) who is looking to give Faith (Reylynn Caster) a gift. Faith isn’t home, but Lucy decides to sit with Sharon anticipating Faith will be back any minute, and that’s when Sharon opens up about Cassie’s death, but bypasses the details about Daniel. Later, Sharon catches up with Daniel at Crimson Lights and informs him that Lucy came by and they spoke about Cassie, but reassures him she didn’t mention his part on that night.

With all that being said, it seems like the soap’s writers could be taking us for quite the ironic ride this summer. Why all these memories about Cassie and how she died? And why is Lucy all of a sudden so eager to hang around Faith, especially given Lucy is knee-deep in high school and Faith is in college? Could history be on the verge of repeating itself in quite the ironic way?

Again, Cassie was younger than Daniel, but had a crush on him and was always eager to hang around him. While we think Lucy’s fascination with Faith strikes more of a "fangirl" chord, Lucy is eager to hang around the older Faith. Is it possible that the young ladies will also find themselves at a party where alcohol is involved, and the supposed fun night ends in a tragic accident? Possibly. We can imagine two scenarios along these lines.

Given Faith has already gone through a rebellious/alcoholic phase, we assume she’s sworn off liquor. If she and Lucy wind up at a party, it’s a big possibility that Faith will be the sober one trying to help a drunken Lucy who somehow goes off the rails. Then while Faith tries to drive Lucy home, perhaps Lucy grabs at the wheel or does something else to distract Faith, and the two get into a car accident, leaving both their lives in the balance.

In scenario two, we can only guess that Faith has decided to drink with her friends at a party where Lucy finds her. Wanting to help someone she looks up to get home safely, Lucy then offers Faith a ride, but Faith provides a distraction in the car and the duo gets into a car accident, again leaving their lives in the balance.

Unfortunately in both hypotheticals, the chaos would send shockwaves through Genoa City. Daniel, Sharon and Nick would be distraught, and you can bet there’d be some finger-pointing as to who’s at fault. Plus, with Sharon being on these mysterious new meds for her bipolar disorder, there’s a chance her reaction becomes quite erratic and even frightening.

While we can’t be absolutely certain that an accident with Faith and Lucy is bound to happen soon on the soap, we can see the writing on the wall that something is brewing.

New episodes of The Young and the Restless air weekdays on CBS. Episodes become available to stream on Paramount Plus the next day.
