Owen Farrell was told bluntly that he's 'not the ref' in an exchange during Saracens' victory over Gallagher Premiership title rivals Bath at the Rec.

The former England captain was at the heart of the defending champions' 15-12 win, kicking a 78th minute penalty to seal victory.

Given the influence of Farrell, it's perhaps unsurprising that Bath, and hooker Niall Annett in particular, tried their best to get under the skin of the fly-half, who will join Racing 92 this summer.

The exchange occurred after England lock Maro Itoje made head-on-head contact with Bath number eight Alfie Barbeary.

Referee Luke Pearce consulted with television match official David Rose before brandishing a yellow card - although it could arguably have been worse for Saracens.

As Farrell continued to remonstrate with Pearce about Itoje's yellow card, Annett took exception with the Saracens star's chat with the official.

"Oh shut up, Niall," said Farrell as Annett got involved.

"He's gone, he's gone," replied the hooker, waving to Farrell as he did so. "You're not the ref."

Farrell hit back, saying: "I'm allowed to talk to him."

After the brief exchange fizzled out, Pearce had a quiet word with Annett, saying: "Niall, I don't need that, mate."

The incident had TNT's commentators in stitches, with former England No. 8 Lawrence Dallaglio saying: "They know it winds him up, that's why players come to him."
