Zendaya Reacts to Meme Showing All “Spider-Man” Female Leads Then Playing Tennis Stars

Kirsten Dunst, Emma Stone and Zendaya have each played leading roles in 'Spider-Man' movies and later portrayed tennis players on the big screen

Zendaya is joining a notable cinematic lineage.

When Zendaya, 27, and her Challengers costars Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist appeared on the April 23 episode of Good Morning America, the show's co-anchor Robin Roberts showed the actors a meme noting that each lead actress in live-action Spider-Man history has later gone on to portray a tennis player on the big screen.

"I have seen this," Zendaya said, in reaction to the meme. "I don’t know! We were joking, I was like, maybe it’s just some prophecy that I need to fulfill."

"It’s quite funny, isn’t that? I don’t know," she added. "I guess it worked out for all of them."

Zendaya, who stars as a tennis coach in Challengers, succeeded Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone as Peter Parker's main love interest in the Spider-Man films. Dunst, 41, previously portrayed Mary Jane Watson in the three web-slinging movies made in the 2000s, while Stone, 35, played Gwen Stacy in the two Spider-Man movies released in 2012 and 2014, respectively.

Dunst portrayed a tennis player in 2004's romantic comedy Wimbledon opposite costar Paul Bettany; the film released roughly three months after Spider-Man 2, which she co-lead with Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, hit theaters.

Stone later entered the world of Spider-Man when Sony rebooted the franchise with Andrew Garfield in the lead role for 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man. Their series lasted only two films, though, as Sony and Marvel Studios later struck a deal to incorporate the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leading to Holland and Zendaya's films.

After Stone's run as Gwen Stacy ended, the actress also took to the tennis courts to portray legendary athlete Billie Jean King in 2017's Battle of the Sexes. That movie depicts King's famous 1973 match against Bobby Riggs, whom Steve Carell portrayed in the movie.

Coincidentally, all three pairs of live-action Spider-Man leads have each dated after filming entries in the series together.

Challengers is in theaters April 26.
