Not a myth

Goldfish the size of dinner plates are multiplying at an alarming rate in the sewers after thoughtless owners flush them down the toilet.

The creatures not only survive their journey into the sewers, but thrive - and Canadian authorities have issued a warning after 40 were found in one sewage plant.

Kate Wilson from Alberta’s environment department said, 'That's really scary because it means they're reproducing in the wild, they are getting quite large and they are surviving the winters.

‘It's quite a surprise how large we're finding them and the sheer number.'

Goldfish are considered an invasive species, and carry parasites which could be harmful to other fish.
