Baby Blog: Send Help! We've Got The Lurgy – And We Aren’t Coping Well

Our new mum and her baby are under the weather and struggling to cope

My baby is poorly. He's a spluttering, snotty mess. And thanks to all the splutter, so am I.

Did you know children get six colds a year? Inevitably we then catch them and their tiny colds become our big colds.

No one knows quite where they get them although the crèche is my main suspect. That many kids each with six colds a year? The likelihood is that there is one permanent fixture - the perpetual cold lurking, ready to strike us down at any second.

His smile has gone AWOL along with his appetite, which is pretty elusive at the best of times, and have been replaced with pints of projectile snot.

The poor thing has all the symptoms but in miniature. It's like someone sucked on a helium balloon and coughed. A little bleat of a splutter like that YouTube video of the baby panda sneezing.

I think nature intended it to be the saddest little noise because whenever he makes my heart string feels a little tug and I just want to present him with some chicken soup immediately.

The pharmacist (and the Internet) say he's fine. That it's just a cold and nothing Calpol won't cure but the anxious mum part of my brain is still semi-convinced that he has a previously undiscovered rare form of pneumonia.

Worst of all, he can't have a good moan about how he is really feeling – leaving my to hazard a guess based on his miniature spluttering.

It's all too frustrating that I can't communicate with him that it's just a cold and he'll feel himself again soon. As far as he knows, he's indefinitely resigned to being a one man snot making machine.

He can't just take a couple of Nurofen, call in sick and re watch a 'Peep Show' box set in the knowledge he'll be fine in a couple of days. And perhaps even worse, neither can I.

For the first time in my life I am having to actually be active and ill. This really is the worst thing. Ordinarily, I would undoubtedly be watching 'This Morning' in my duvet, however, now it's business as usual.

My little sneezy baby panda needs me, cold or no cold. Cold or no cold, I am on 24/7 call primed with baby nasal sprays and a warm flannel.

Sneezy baby panda is waking up every three hours, probably to ensure he doesn't drown in his own snot meaning I can't just sleep off my cold.

Collectively, we are a poorly duo and struggling to cope. Tandem illness is not something I would wish on my worst enemy.

Please send Vicks Vapor Rub urgently, we need your help.
