Beached whale found 800 metres ashore in Yorkshire

Marine experts have been left baffled after a rare whale was found over 800 metres from the shore in the Humber Estuary, Skeffling, East Yorkshire.

The 33ft mammal is thought to have died after getting caught in shallow waters – rolling onto its own blowhole before getting swept inland by the tide.  Experts are “95 percent sure” the whale is a female from the rare Sei species – only three of which have been found stranded on the British coast in the last twenty years.

“It is sad. It was in shallow water of about 4ft to 5.25ft, making contact with the bottom,” said Andy Gibson, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. “This was about 800m offshore. When it gets in that situation it rolls onto its side and it can cover its blowhole.”

“Sometimes whales come into shallow water looking for food and get stuck,” added Kirsten Smith, North Seas manager at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. “With the high tide the whale probably got carried up on to the salt marsh, got pushed back further in shore and then got stuck when the tide went out.”

Earlier this month a fin whale washed up dead near Spurn Point, North East Lincolnshire after getting stranded at Immingham. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust has seen a rise in whale sightings over the last year but are unable to explain the increase in the North Sea.

build a steep levy out of rock that has to be moved by cranes. water may filter through with high tide, but built high enough, whales would have no reason to attempt to jump it lookin for food.. who the hell wants to jump on to sharp pointy rocks!! This may have happened over a period of a few days.. because the shore line is indeed seen in the far back ground. likely, not just high tide, but tidal waves, may be the culprit. The whale may have been lookin for food in shallows, but it's not a stupid species. it would have realized that it was starting to touch ground and would have likely attempted to back track. and lets remember, tides dont just come in and out in half and hour.. it takes a little more time than that.. i think the whale would have had ample time to back track, and have at least made it closer to shore, unless the whale was sick and new it was dying, could have been depressed and in a weak state, that would indeed, cause suicide :( very sad either way.

"Specialists from the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust were able to perform a post mortem examination on the whale after it was deposited on salt marsh due to a particularly high tide." - BBC. 'Baffled', indeed!

I would sympathise with you S T, but comments (plural) has no apostrophe, and grammar is spelt with two 'a's. And what is your constructive comment? The stranding of whales has gone on for centuries, but remains a heart-rending tragedy for these intelligent and it would appear, generally happy creatures (mostly they can still live out their lives beyond our reach).

It was probably like the whale in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. Came out of nowhere, tried to get acquainted with the open field, then baaaam!
