Bear's-eye view: 'Collar cam' gives insight into giant polar bear's world

Experts at Oregon Zoo hope the high-tech collar fitted to Tasul the bear will create a 'digital footprint' for polar bear behaviour

Researchers at an American zoo have given animal lovers a unique 'bear's-eye view' of the world - after fitting a collar camera to Tasul their giant polar bear.

Experts at Oregon Zoo hope the high-tech collar fitted to Tasul the bear will create a 'digital footprint' for polar bear behaviour.

The collar will detect tiny alterations in the bear's movements, which will be converted into digital signals to aid the zoo's research.

The collar also has a GoPro camera attached, providing a bear's-eye view of Tasul's world.

Fascinating footage shows Tasul pacing around her environment, chasing balls and swimming underwater.

A similar device has also been fitted to ten different free roaming polar bears in the Arctic. Tasul's digital signals can be compared to those of the other creatures.

Amy Cutting, a curator at Oregon Zoo, said: 'Tasul has responded really well to the training. She's learning new behaviours and cooperating well - it's all like a new challenge for her.

'She seemed very interested and participated willingly.'
