Brown intervention threatens to deepen phone-hacking scandal

By politics.co.uk staff

There are unconfirmed reports today that an upcoming intervention by Gordon Brown is about to significantly deepen the phone-hacking row.

The reports, which currently only amount to rumours, suggest that the Sunday Times may have accessed medical records regarding the former prime minister's family.

The allegations relate to when Mr Brown was chancellor.

The intervention threatens to expand the row across the Murdoch stable, with the taint now affecting the Sunday Times as well as the News of the World.

Other reports suggest Mr Brown's bank details may have been acquired.

Some of the material from the interception is then understood to have featured in articles from one of News International's titles.

Mr Brown is expected to confirm the reports in a statement to the Commons later. The current reports come from the BBC, the Independent and the Guardian.
