From the air, from the sea and on land, this extraordinary footage shows how 156,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy 69 years ago to drive out German forces from Occupied France.

This 10-minute Pathe film shows the daring operation unfold. With clips of bombers flying over the French coastline as well as wave upon wave of soldiers battle their way up the beaches.

Named the 'Greatest Combined Operation in World's History' the spectacular black and white footage details the start of the daring attack which paved the way for Allied victory over German forces the following year.

British, American, Canadian and other Allied forces took Hitler's army by surprise on the morning of June 6. Two months later they had captured Paris and in September they took Brussels.

It is estimated 4,400 Allied troops, airmen and sailors died on the first day of the fighting.
