Eight Bodies Found In Costa Concordia Wreck

Eight more bodies have been found in the wreckage of the semi-submerged cruise liner Costa Concordia, according to Italian officials.

One of them is believed to be five-year-old Dayana Arlotti, an Italian girl who was the youngest passenger. She was traveling with her father.

An official said: "Bodies of victims have been located. The operation to recover them is under way."

The Concordia continues to lie on its side close to the Italian port of Giglio.

The previous search of underwater deck areas was called off on January 31 over fears the cruise liner could slip from the ledge where it came to rest.

Divers resumed the search on Wednesday, checking areas of the wrecked liner where some of the missing were last seen, in the hope of recovering more bodies.

And in the past week, pumping has started to shift the ship's fuel reserves off the vessel and avoid an ecological catastrophe.

Thirty-two people are believed to have died in the disaster. 17 Bodies have been recovered so far.

The Costa Concordia was carrying about 4,200 passengers and crew on a week's cruise when it rammed into the reef during dinner a couple of hours after leaving an Italian port.

The boat started badly listing to one side almost immediately, causing passengers to panic and scramble for the lifeboats.

But the evacuation was not ordered until about an hour later, and some passengers jumped overboard when several of the lifeboats could not be deployed because of the ship's tilt.

The captain of the Costa Concordia Francesco Schettino is under house arrest at his home near Naples while he is investigated for alleged manslaughter and abandoning his ship.

I am so glad that they found the little girl, that was one of the things that saddened me was that she may never be found, now she can be returned back to her mamma who can say goodbye properly. RIP little Dayana sleep tight little angel

so the captain in his act of gross cowardice reflects the entire Italian people?

The divers who enter that wreck knowing that it could slip down into deep water with them inside and their chances of survival are a little less than nill and yet they still do their job, these men are also Italian but according to you they are natural cowards, how does that work?

Of course it does not work for normal people but it does for the bigots and knowfeckalls on this septic message board

Does anyone know what they're gonna do with the wreck? Are they just gonna let it slide into the ocean or what?

Also, are they serious about Schettino? Last I'd heard they were talking about charging him for murder (one count per body to be exact), so is that not the case?

Three bodies remain on the Ocean Hound fishing vessel left there for 20 years by the British government following a collision that cost the lives of all crew ,cover up is all that can be said , the family's can never have closure ,so its at least heart felt efforts by the Divers and Italian rescue services for this tragic event can have some end

Tragic of course and all sympathies to their loved ones. BUT twenty years ago the technology to recover bodies was not anything like that it is today and yet they still seek eleven lost today on that sad vessel.

Realisticaly following this much time its more thabn likely there is nothing to recover, time to let go isnt it?

I was one of the divers on that job and it was not technology that got in the way but the uk government could not give a toss ,Just pleased that the Italians are doing all they can ,The Ocean Hound would have been a simple lift ,cover up was the greater cause.

Lets hope the Italian authorities do bring charges against this captain and were't just pandering to the press and public. I've always seen a reluctance in catholic countries to condemn one of their own but lets see if this will be an exception to the rule.

"alleged manslaughter", where the f. --u. --c. --k do they get the alleged #$%$ from. This spineless piece of s. ---h. ---i. ---t was the captain of the ship at the time she struck the rocks, therefore there is no such thing as "alleged manslaughter", that excuse went out of the window as soon as the first body was recovered, it is pure manslaughter and nothing else, especially after the piece of s. ---h. ---i. ---t deserted a sinking ship just to save his own miserable life.

such a shame that all of those people had to perish the way they did when the only one who should have gone down with the ship ran away leaving a brown streak behind him. Typical Italian.

If you mean the only person in the world who can "ACIDENTLY" slip in to lifeboats!
        Don't you mean yellow streak!

why sail in a boat that resembles a block of flats?
    • machineman  •  London, England  •  3 months ago
vessels are made too big which hampers rescue missions

Would be surprising if they turned up with bodies not on the passenger list. Stowaways, a harem perhaps.
