Gaddafi Missiles 'Aimed At Tripoli' Uncovered

If Colonel Gaddafi had a suicide plan for Tripoli, anti-Gaddafi troops believe they have uncovered evidence to show it may not have been an empty threat.

They peel back the wrapping on their astonishing find - four radar-guided cruise missiles abandoned by Gaddafi's army.

Each can be armed in just five minutes and loaded with high explosives.

The soldiers take us further down the track to show us the launcher - it is pointing towards the city centre.

Anti-Gaddafi forces are at the controls now but two months ago, a Russian envoy warned he had information that Gaddafi planned to blow up Tripoli with missiles if it fell to his enemies.

We are at a location the anti-Gaddafi troops have asked us to keep secret.

Khaled El Farguny is a fighter from Manchester. He tells us he is in charge of keeping the area safe.

We are less than six miles from the city centre but the rebels are concerned these lethal weapons may fall into the wrong hands.

Khaled works as a businessman in Manchester but came to help his fellow countrymen in Tripoli.

He said: "There are Gaddafi forces or militia round here."

Asked if he is worried they will return and try to reclaim the missiles, he said: "Yes, so we need help urgently, really to take these missiles away to save Tripoli."

Salem Abdulhafid is also from Manchester and is a mechanic. He drove to Tripoli from England.

I ask him if he is qualified to do the job of guarding the missiles.

"I have no idea what we're doing," he says, "We know nothing.

"We've just seen them here so we're trying to save the people. We are not going to let anyone come inside here except if they have permission."

Khaled says he is in charge of guarding the site. While we are there, another group of anti-Gaddafi fighters arrives.

Word has got around about the missiles and they have come to look. Khaled wants them to leave telling us he does not trust anyone.

The fighters say this is just the tip of the iceburg. Littered with lethal weapons, it may take years to make Tripoli safe.

It is not the way he may have planned it but Gaddafi has still left the city in chaos.
