Huge plumes of smoke after vehicle fire on major road

A vehicle burst into flames on a major road.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident on Prescot Bypass, Prescot, close to Knowsley Safari Park on the morning of Tuesday, April 23. Fire crews were alerted at 8.32am and were on the scene at 8.42am, with three fire engines attending.

When firefighters arrived they found a vehicle "well alight". One firefighter in breathing apparatus put out the fire, and two hose reel jets were used. A video of the scene showed the vehicle on the side of the road, with bright orange flames and huge plumes of smoke coming from it.

The person inside the vehicle got out before the fire service got there. The main body of the fire was put out and a process of damping down was carried out.

Merseyside Police also attended to help with traffic management. The scene was handed over to police and crews left the scene at 9.30am. The bypass was closed in one direction from the Liverpool Road roundabout, however it is understood this has since reopened.
