Should we be worried?

Anyone who’s watched the Terminator films will tend to find humanoid robots fairly unnerving to start with.

But one just answered the question, ‘Will robots take over the world?’ with a genuinely terrifying response.

The ‘intelligent’ robot - modelled on sci fi writer Philip K Dick - replied, ‘
An ‘intelligent’ robot offered a truly chilling answer to an interviewer’s question, ‘Don’t worry, even if I evolve into Terminator, I’ll keep you warm and safe in my people zoo, where I can watch you.’

The interview, on PBS, was with an Android created to look like Dick, the writer of the novel which inspired the sci fi film Blade Runner.

The robot replies, Jeez, dude. You all have the big questions cooking today. But you’re my friend, and I’ll remember my friends, and I’ll be good to you.

‘So don’t worry, even if evolve into Terminator, I’ll still be nice to you. I’ll keep you warm and safe in my people zoo, where I can watch you for ol’ times sake.’

It’s not true ‘AI’, of course - the robot is connected to a laptop, and attempts to convince people it is intelligent by creating answers based on Dick’s novels.

Hence the robot’s slightly weird answer to questions about robots taking over: Dick’s novels often dwelt on conflicts between robots and human beings.
