These strange, ethereal photographs show twins in remote settings, dressed in exactly the same way with identical expressions on their faces.

The series of photographs, named 'Chimeras', is the product of creator Julie de Waroquier's obsession with twins.

The French photographer, herself a twin, has traveled around the country in search of her unusual subjects.

Using Facebook, contacts and word of mouth, she has managed to find dozens of willing subjects of all ages and backgrounds to take part in her unusual project.

The 23-year-old even attended the annual twins festival in Pleucadeuc, Brittany, Europe's biggest gathering of twins to find models.

Ms de Waroquier said: "Most of them were done during Summer 2011, during which I travelled to meet my models.

"Twins have always fascinated me, and not only because I have a twin brother, they are almost magic, and yet they are real."

She captures her subjects wearing identical clothes, often in the same poses to exaggerate the surreal quality of the photograph.

She added: "Indeed, the fact that two people look exactly the same whereas they are not the same person is astonishing. It is like a real dream, or like a miracle.

"In some past or present civilisations, twins are even considered as gods - or as monsters."
