On This Day: Paul McCartney marries Linda Eastman

March 12: Emerging from Marylebone Registry Office, Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman fight their way through a swarm of paparazzi and sobbing girls in this evocative Pathé clip.

Millions of young hearts were collectively broken when The Beatles star married the American photographer back in 1969.

The Pathé narrator notes "The last bachelor Beatle was no longer a bachelor" as footage shows McCartney holding his new wife close to his side and battling against the throngs of press and police.

He continues: "London bobbies and Fleet Street photographers tangled with tear-stained teenagers who are bidding farewell to the bachelor of The Beatles who had held out against marriage for so long."

Accompanied by Linda's daughter Heather, the family pile into the car and drive off to a soundtrack of screaming fans.

The narrator adds: "Exit the McCartneys, the very popular group."

McCartney later recalled in the book 'Many Years From Now': "We had a big argument the night before we got married, and it was nearly called off...[it's] miraculous that we made it. But we did."

The couple first met in 1967 and were married two years later, just a year before the Liverpudlian band broke up.

McCartney collaborated with his wife in the band Wings, had four children, including famous fashion designer Stella, and remained together until Linda's death from breast cancer in 1998.
