The ‘Polar Vortex’ deep freeze in America has broken records, but also caused spectacular sights in the frigid conditions.

Monday night saw eerie steam rise from Lake Michigan, as the sub-zero deep freeze settled over Chicago.

As the arctic air met the (relatively) warm water, a vapour formed over the entire lake, creating a spectacular sight for passers-by.

More than half the US population is currently suffering under the arctic blasts of the Polar Vortex sweeping across the States.

The whirlpool of sub-zero air is currently heading south and east, causing the coldest temperatures for decades in many states.

The Polar Vortex has caused a number of deaths, closed schools and businesses, cancelled thousands of flights and left highly-populated cities facing colder temperatures than Siberia.
