Police Van Rolls Over Elderly Man Killing Him

An elderly man has been killed after being struck by a police van in West Yorkshire.

Officers were called to Pudsey Park at around 2.15pm on Saturday.

They left their vehicle to deal with reports of a disturbance when it rolled forward and collided with the pensioner who was walking in the park.

Paramedics were called to the scene in Church Lane, Pudsey, but the man died of his injuries.

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police said the matter was immediately referred to the police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

One local resident, who did not wish to be named, told Sky News: "I did not know him. Apparently he was sat on a wall in the park, and the police van has gone down chasing kids or something and they have got out of the van. The van rolled on into him.

"People have said what had happened. They said the 85-year-old man was dead. It is the talk of the town this morning.

"It was a sunny day yesterday. He was probably out for a walk in the park. There was an ice-cream van parked up there. It is there all the time."
