Earthquake Hits Caribbean Island Of Barbados

An earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 has struck off the Caribbean island of Barbados.

The quake hit early morning local time and people called radio stations to report it, according to the Daily Nation newspaper.

Its epicentre was 126 miles northeast of the capital Bridgetown at a depth of 20 miles.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties in Barbados or the nearby islands of Martinique and St Lucia.

A Reuters reporter in Barbados said the earthquake did not immediately appear to have had any notable impact in Bridgetown.

Barbadians were advised by Judy Thomas, the director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency to "go on about your business as usual".

Most people on the road in the early dawn, or on their way to work in their cars, apparently felt nothing.

"Everything is normal," said Voice of Barbados (92.9 FM) morning show radio host Carol Roberts.
