Schoolboy, aged NINE, cleans up with collection of over 40 vacuum cleaners

Hoover-mad Harry Burrows started his life-long passion for the household appliance as a baby

Schoolboy Harry Burrows has got no excuse for not cleaning his room - after collecting over 40 vacuum cleaners.

The Hoover-mad nine-year-old started his life-long passion for the household appliance as a baby when his parents put it on to sooth him to sleep.

Harry became obsessed with vacuum cleaners and started collecting and repairing old ones with his grandfather Derek, 65, a retired electrician.

He was given his first cleaner - a Henry - for his fourth birthday and he now spends every last penny of pocket money hoovering up rare models.

He now has over 40 different kinds of vacuum cleaner which he keeps at his family's home in Lapal, Halesowen, West Mids.

Dad Paul, 37, a surveyor for Worcestershire County Council, said: 'His obsession with vacuums started almost from the day Harry was born.

'We used to notice he would sleep right through if we did housework with the hoover on but would scream the house down if it was quiet.

'If the hoover went off he'd start crying so we just got used to switching it on whenever we needed to get him off to sleep.

'He seemed to find the sound of it soothing. He's loved the things ever since and is always on the look out for a different model.

'We’ve got them in the loft, living room, spare bedroom and they are in Harry’s bedroom.'

Mum Sarah, 37, added: 'The noise was like a lullaby sending Harry to sleep.'

His impressive collection includes a 1930s Electrolux, which he has entered into a local competition to find the oldest working domestic electrical appliance in the Black Country.

Harry is also the proud owner of two pump action, non-electrical vacuums from the early 1900s, a 1960s Hoover Junior and a 1940s Electrolux.

Over the years Harry has scoured car boot sales, second hand shops and the internet for unusual models. His parents estimate they have spent around £1,000 so far on his collection which he keeps in his bedroom and the loft.

To keep up to date with any rare vacuums which come up on the market, Harry has set up an eBay account which sends him an alert every time someone puts a cleaner up for sale.

He is currently on the lookout for a Kirby model from the 1960s.

Harry, who attends Halesowen’s Howley Grange Primary School, said: 'I don’t really know why I like them so much – perhaps it’s because my grandpa is an electrician.

'My favourite is a 1960s Dirt Devil because it’s the best for picking up my Jack Russell dog Jacket’s hairs.'

As well as vacuum cleaners, Harry has also started collecting old lawn mowers.

Mum Sarah, who runs a florist, added: 'At this rate we'll have to move into a bigger house with a garage. Harry loves his vacuums and now he's expressed an interest in lawn mowers too.

'At least I know the house won't get dirty and the lawn will always be mowed.'
