Suspect Shoots Detective Dead At Police HQ

A murder suspect has shot dead a detective as he was being interviewed inside the Jackson police headquarters in Mississippi.

Detective Eric Smith and the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Jeremy Powell, were shot multiple times.

Powell died from his injuries, although it is unclear who shot him.

A Jackson City Councilman Chokwe Lumumba told reporters he did not know how the suspect ended up dead.

He said: "I understand there may have been more than one police officer in the room."

Powell was being questioned on the third floor of the building when the shooting happened.

He had been arrested earlier on Thursday over the fatal stabbing of a 20-year-old man.

City spokesman Chris Mims said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will take over the investigation, which is standard procedure.

He said: "We're asking for everybody's patience, we will be releasing information as soon as we have it.

"Other officers in the police department heard gunshots ring out and when they went to the interview room, discovered that both the suspect and the detective were deceased."

It is not clear if the gun used in the shooting belonged to the officer.

Det Smith, a decorated officer who had been with the department since 1995, was married with two sons.
