Tumbling Asteroid To Pass Earth Within Hours

An asteroid bigger than an aircraft carrier will brush past the Earth within the next few hours.

The 400-metre (437-yard) wide asteroid, called 2005 YU55, will speed past the planet at a distance of 201,700 miles - closer than the moon.

It Is our closest encounter with such a large space rock in three decades.

But Marina Brozovic of Nasa said there is no cause for alarm.

"It is not going to hit us," she said.

"We have a good idea of its orbit for the next 100 years and the is no chance of impact."

The asteroid was discovered in April 2010, when observations with the Arecibo radar telescope revealed a fuzzy image of the rock tumbling through space.

Nasa is hoping to take much higher resolution photographs of its dark surface as it passes by at 23.28 GMT time on November 8.

Amateur astronomers will need a six-inch telescope to stand a chance of seeing the asteroid, but have been warned that it is moving so fast that it will be difficult to track.

Nasa has set up a near earth object programme known as Spaceguard to locate the estimated 1,000 asteroids and comets larger than 1km (1,093 yards) in diameter - large enough to cause mass extinction of most life on Earth.

hear we go again measuring things in football fields ,double decker busses and elephants standing on top of each other, and it says its bigger than an aircraft carrier so how many elephants bigger is it then we simpletons might have a good idea.

In relation to size does anyone know how it equates to double decker buses or football pitches? I'm not very good at measuring with aircraft carriers you see.
      • Jon 6 months ago
It is slightly longer than a piece of string.

It would have landed but word has got around the Universe about speed cameras, parking charges, clampers and road tax. However the little critters that live on it were quite happy about the ability to enter the U.K. without the correct papers !!!

Whenever there's something like this, the weather is so dreadful that we can't see anything with or without a 6inch telescope...

If I'm going to die I'm having a cream cake and to hell with the calories!

Just kidding. Shame we can't see it to be honest. My 4 inch telescope isn't up to the job and besides, the weather is bad :(

Does anyone really believe they would tell us if it were going to hit? Can you imagine the chaos?

That's great, and we even know its name: 2005 YU55. Mind you if it had've hit the earth it would probably be the only thing that could've solved the Euro crisis

Just about big enough for politicians and their illuminati chums to board and p..s off back to their own cold and lifeless planet that they ravaged and destroyed through sheer greed and corruption - like they're doing with ours.

Can I hop on, I want to get the hell out of here, but don't have money for a flight ticket. This must give us a free flight through space. No fuel tax, no landing charges, no stupid meals by glum trolley ladies, not easy jet #$%$ or Airbus engine troubles. No repetitive CNN, no BBC 24's stupid jingle. Plus there may be more interesting aliens on it. humans are boring and corrupt. Just a breezy free fall. Whooopppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
