Turkish Fans Riot Amid Football Fix Claims

Turkish football fans clashed with police after the chairman of Fenerbahce was jailed amid match-fixing claims.

Fenerbahce supporters threw stones and bottles at police and journalists outside the courthouse in Besiktas where Aziz Yildirim was jailed.

Reporters were forced to seek shelter in the court building while officers responded with tear gas, scattering the protesters.

Fenerbahce boss Aziz Yildirim is among 26 people remanded in custody following an investigation into 19 matches. The club have denied any wrongdoing.

Three other Fenerbahce directors, the president of rival club Trabzonspor and a director of the Bursaspor team were among those arrested and questioned.

Fenerbahce won the league title last season, edging out Trabzonspor on the final day of the campaign.

If the allegations are proven, Fenerbahce face being stripped of their championship and potentially demoted from Turkey's top division.

Turkey's Prime Minister, Tayyip Erdogan who is a keen Fenerbahce supporter, said the claims have left a stain on the country.
