Unholy Row In Jerusalem Over Status Of Women

Equality campaigners say women in Jerusalem are facing discrimination and segregation because of the growing influence of ultra-religious Jewish leaders.

An attempt to ban women singing in public places is the latest move to spark protests after a few extremist Rabbis declared it too sexual for men to hear.

"The female voice is beautiful and it is fine for women to sing to each other but we do not want men exposed to the temptation," Yakov Halperin, a religious member of Jerusalem's City Council, said.

Women's rights groups have taken to organising public sing-a-longs in the street in response.

"We cannot let them silence us," one woman said as a crowd of about 100 women sang beside one of the city's main roads.

"This is a slippery slope and it's our democracy that's at stake," another protester said.

Even Israel's military, long a bastion of sexual equality, has been drawn into the row with some religious soldiers boycotting ceremonial events where female soldiers might be singing.

Military leaders have refused to bow to the demands for all male choirs.

The increasingly conservative attitude towards women reflects the steady demographic shift in Israel, particularly in Jerusalem.

The ultra-orthodox Jewish community - with its preference for large families - is the fastest expanding sector of society. Some sections of the community shun Israel's modern, liberal values.

In religious areas of the city there are growing incidents of self-imposed "separation" of the sexes, despite laws banning segregation.

Frequently women sit at the back of buses, have separate entrances in some shops and different hours at medical facilities.

The practice is confined to ultra-observant neighbourhoods but women's groups claim it is part of the creeping marginalisation of half of the population.

They point to the trend among advertising agencies to use only images of men in their campaigns in Jerusalem.

Risque images of women that can be found plastered on billboards in Tel Aviv are considered offensive by the ultra-religious community.

"It is now rare to find any images of women at all, even those dressed modestly," Idit Karni told Sky News.

She has joined other campaigners in hanging posters of herself around Jerusalem to try to restore females to public view.

"I am a mother of daughters and I do not want them to grow up in a city where women are becoming invisible," Ms Karni said.

Liberal rabbis are backing the poster campaign.

"What we're fighting against is a few extremists who are trying to distort Judaism. The faith is all about equality, and so is Israel," Rabbi Uri Ayalon told Sky News.

The Jewish State prides itself on women's equality. Golda Meir was Israel's Prime Minister in 1969 at a time when Britain had not yet passed laws guaranteeing women equal pay.

Israel doesn't have freedom of assembly.
Ten activists were detained and held for questioning over
blocking roadways at a protest in the Sheikh Jarrah
neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem yesterday,
late Friday (July 9, 2010). The Palestinian district is
the site of weekly demonstrations against the takeover
of local residents’ homes by Israeli settlers. The
demonstrations are frequently attended by Israeli peace
activists among them several Hadash (Democratic Front
for Equality and Peace –Communist Party of Israel) militants.
Some 300 peace and left-wing activists arrived in the
neighborhood to rally against the evacuation of Arab families
in favor of Jewish residents. The protestors attempted to
enter the "Simeon the Just" compound, claiming a court
had given them permission to do so, but were stopped
by police and Border Guard officers. Activists who clashed
with the police said the officers used violent means against
them despite a passive protest. Well-know author David
Grossman and former Attorney General Michael Ben-Yair
attended the rally as well. Grossman was also pushed by
the police. "We have wanted to protest inside the neighborhood
with the Palestinians for the past nine months. We have a
court approval," said one of the protestors, Shir Sternberg.
"We demanded to enter in a non-violent manner, and the
police pushed us." Some six weeks ago, several hundred
Hebrew University students and lecturers marched from the
Mount Scopus campus in Jerusalem to Sheikh Jarrah in
protest over the settlers’ takeover of local residents’ homes.

The protest march included such prominent professors
as Ze’ev Sternhell, Yaron Ezrahi, Ariel Hirschfeld and
others. The protesters carried signs calling for and end to
settlements in East Jerusalem. "Democracy stops at
Sheikh Jarrah," some signs said, while others read
      "Stop ethnic cleansing"

Israel doesn't have freedom of expression, they are in the world's
largest open air prison system, which is the enforcement of
apartheid, the walls are 24 ft, twice is high as the Berlin Wall,
the barbed wire fences are illegal per international human
rights organization, as they cause great bodily harm to
people. This is to bring about an pure 'Ethnocracy' in Israel.
      Israel doesn't have protection against unreasonable searches;
the IDF just barges in & ransacks the houses completely
      if you are Non-Jewish.

      Israel doesn't have freedom of the press;
the press are frequently searched and film seized at two points,
if not more, the demonstrations of solidarity groups of Jewish
and Arabic are not ever placed on the news. They are groups
dedicated to living together as good neighbors. The Press is
filtered to be Pro-Jewish Israeli, lying by omission, to be a
pure racist Jewish State, that is Ethnocracy. S. Africa had
to change with the times, now its Israel's turn.

      Israel doesn't have freedom of religion;
people are cut off from their places of worship for their daily and
weekly services and religious holidays. Only Jerusalem's Muslims can
go and they are repeatedly harassed and offended by the PM and his
escort police and Jerusalem squatters. Israel does not allow proselytizing
of any Non-Jewish religion as a matter of practice. One teacher who
repeatedly invited to Jewish religious events by his students, then
offered once an invitation to one to his religion, he was immediately
arrested and facing 3.5 years for proselytizing violation.

      Rachel Corrie, American Student Activist
Rachel's childhood dream was to end world hunger by the year 2000; the
IDF crushed that dream. She is now revered and honored on all the sites of
Twitter, Orkut, Facebook as a Feminist Heroine. Her parents are now activists
and have an ongoing Wrongful death lawsuit in Haifa, Israel. Amount $1.

Israel has the most racist immigration program in the World 100% Jewish
only; while at the same time, Practices the double standard of the
Jewish lobby in U.S. who always wants more immigration of many
different cultures to the U.S. who are then oriented to do Hate marches
against the American people who want it controlled more to earlier
quotas, who then have to confront hate speech in their own county by
these illegal immigrants. The NAACP had exclusively Jewish
Directorship and leadership when it raised racism in the U.S. to new
levels and brought death to those who were caught in the conflicts.
All of this and repeated double standard rhetoric to the indigenous
Palestine people to leave their homeland.

Many Israeli squatters, in the Occupied Territories now
number 500 thousand are Jewish Americans who have no
experience nor understanding with the Palestinian people
there & are very aggressive with them. They are required to
take military training courses and carry military arms at all times.
They say they don't need fences, the range of the M-16
is their fence. They do go out and take pot shots at
Arab shepherds and planters working in their fields,
just like the youth killed Sunday.Their children are
raised in the propaganda of extremist racism and
Hatred from their dinner table and religious schools.
When visiting Christian Tourists are filming them on the
streets of Hebron the Jewish squatter's
      kids throw rocks and scream
      anti-Christian obscenities at
them, while the IDF soldiers just
watch. In the case of Hebron, it is
now a becoming ghost town of
      abandoned homes there due to
      this continuous daily violence
      and extremism. Those Arabs
who remain literally live in wired
cages of heavy steel screens to
protect them from the rocks and
      assorted projectiles thrown at them.
The Jewish squatters scream and yell at
the Arabs hate slogans. The Jewish squatters
walk about the place brandishing machine guns
and pistols, and fire at random and act like they
own the place. Well over half the town is now a Ghost
Town due to the daily violence. They remind me so much of the
German Nazi S/As, the Brown Shirts, when they had their turn in street fighting in the 1930s!

If Israeli is really a democracy....
why is it that there has never been ONE Arab PM?
Elections of a severely segregated population---not the people at
large, who are denied full citizenship rights, involving Jewish and
Non-Jewish. Only those who are full citizens can vote, get permits and
have the other rights that Jewish Israelis normally have. You say you have
Active Arabs in the government, what function do they fill? Are they
tokens? Are they accused being traitors for doing bilateral talks with other
      Arab countries?
      Was one their pensions canceled?
Why aren't their lower house seats 10% commensurate with the Arab
population demographics which is well over 20%? Israel has never had
an Arab PRIME MINISTER. Their political representatives are not commensurate
with their population numbers. How can it be democratic then?

Israel doesn't respect the right of first title property deeds, the
rightful owners those people who are in the first instance
holders of property title deed who cannot reach the proper
agencies due to the military checkpoints, IDF, lack of passes
(tickets) and financial needs, the recourse, as informed, requires
contracting a specialist attorney. Getting to that attorney
means passing though various IDF checkpoints and a pass/permit
must be cleared to get though. Now, guess what happens at the IDF
      checkpoint..you don't pass. Its a Catch-22 type of Joseph
      Heller book theme.

Israel a democracy? Not If the Israeli Police arrest people who give out
bumper stickers & literature. Ban women from public places.
On street corners they discourage giving them away the West Bank.
If Israel does--it clearly shows people aren't allowed to express
their own opinion in public and Israel is unfortunately not a democracy.
It's a 'Ethnocracy', like the old S. Africa was before they reformed
to an integrated democracy government that they now have.

For all the hate these two sickening beliefs have for each other there really is Very little difference between them.... could an amalgamation of the two be called 'The musjews' ?
I think the so called civilised USA should look again at the support they give these jews.

Look at the origins. Both claim descendancy from Abraham, are kosher/halal etc. Both thoroughly evil and only interested in power at any cost. Even their own followers are regarded as fodder to fight the imagined 'enemy.' These cretins do not realise we are all accidents of birth, not born with specific religious blood in our veins.
      • Nicholas 5 months ago
I'm a converted Muslim and clearly from your statements you know very little about either religion. There is only one statements which you make that is true. '...we are all accidents of birth...' Maybe you should both read a little more, no?

Israel isn't a Democracy; WHY THIS? Israel says it is the only
Democratic country in the ME and it is allied with the U.S. is
      Money & Land;
because it receives over $30 billion dollars over this current
10 year period. During 2002 a well known authority said
that at that time, the U.S. had given Israel 2 Trillion
dollars over the years in financial aid of arms and money
and to use this money to grab land away from its owners.
AND commit UN declared Ethnic Cleansing on its captive
legal owners in order to keep that land. 3-7 billion this year
      in direct & indirect Aid.

Maps pre 1948 show well over 400 Palestinian villages that were completely
destroyed in Israel. Bone fragments of babies, little children, teenagers and
adults are in the ground under that institution of higher learning.

Tel Aviv University sits upon land of a former leveled Palestinian village, whose
      refugees now live in Gaza.

Israel will begin deporting families of illegal migrants in coming weeks,
officials say, as an emotional debate rages over the ballooning numbers
of foreign workers that some fear could threaten the country's Jewish identity.

...fate of the migrants' children that has really ignited the national debate:
Their advocates point out that they are educated in Jewish schools and
speak flawless Hebrew -- they just aren't citizens or Jews.

These workers were brought to Israel by their Government to displace
      the Palestinian workers.

The Jewish Israelis *are* just like the Nazis, only difference is they are
even better at propaganda and their reach is global, so they are able to
trick many of the people in the world into thinking they are the victims
when in fact they are the aggressors. *They* are the threat to world peace.
*They* are the religious nuts with nukes, 4th largest in the world, chemical
weapons and biological weapons of mass destruction. *They* are the
warmongering madmen hell-bent on genocide.Lying is like breathing to the
Israelis. It's clear their leaders don't believe a word they're saying, yet so
much of the world's media voices are in their pocket and so play along.
The only ones who believe them are dumb American Christians
