Video: Slacklining Daredevils In 330ft Stunt

Balanced 328ft above an Australian valley, two daredevils have been showing off the latest extreme sport to enter the mainstream - slacklining.

German tourists Florian Herla and Niklas Winter were filmed walking across the 115ft-long thin strip of nylon at Hanging Rock, in Central Victoria.

Hundreds of millions of Super Bowl viewers watched Andy Lewis' acrobatic routine on a slackline during Madonna's halftime show at the weekend, boosting the sport's mainstream audience.

As its name suggests, slacklining is similar to tightrope-walking but involves the use of a flexible line instead of a taut rope.

Its origins can be traced back to the US in the 1980s, but it has grown hugely in popularity over recent years and has developed into various forms.

A National Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman said the stunt at Hanging Rock on Sunday appeared to be illegal.

"It's illegal without prior approval from the park manager if it's a risky activity, which this clearly is," she said.

Here we go again - the U.S. claiming to have originated something in the 80's that's been around for God knows how long ! I remember slackrope acts in circuses for the last 60 years !

America invented the art of saying they invented stuff, regardless of it's origin!

Impressive, but it would be more so without the safety harness. If you've not seen it, try and see 'Man On Wire' about Philippe Petit's truly amazing walk between the Twin Towers in the 70's, that is terrifying.

The only real risk here is that the lifeline might break if the performer slips, or the slack-line itself breaks. Remote chances, but these people have good nerves that's for sure!

i think that people underestimate the amount of skill, control and talent slacklining takes. these guys are only 2 of an expanding group of people who are taking low level slacklining to the extreme of highlining. its a hobby, they do it for fun. its like skateboarding, or football. they do a sport that makes them feel fulfilled. and using safety ropes is the same as wearing shinpads. you don't want to hurt yourself doing something you enjoy. also, the high you get from doing a highline walk is incredible.

sure, it may have been illegal, but so's underage drinking, underage sex, and watching an 18 movie if you're under 18. and who can say they've never done any of those things?

Hardly that dangerous, they have a safety line attached to the wire that can presumably hold their weight if they fell. Rubbish

Edward P - Those werent slackrope acts in circuses, they were tightrope walkers and trapeze artists, and I have been going to circuses since the 50s..

How is this man risking his life or doing anything that dangerous, as long as he is attached to that safety rope? Without that it could be lethal, but not with it, unless of course the rope breaks or becomes disconnected in some way. Having said that I couldnt do that myslef as I have a totally illogical fear of heiights. I cant even walk over a bridge, that spans a road with traffic that goes underneath it. Last time I did that (because I HAD to get to the other side of the road) I felt like I was walking knee deep in marshmallows. It was horrendous, and I nearly ended up on my hands and knees so that I couldnt SEE the traffic going underneath. My Mum didnt have this fear, but her Mum did, and thats where I get this horrible phobia from. Thanks for that Nan, couldnt you have given me something a bit more positive? LOL
