A piece of history! Baker creates 5ft 'world's biggest Victoria sponge cake'

The enormous sponge stands at five foot in diameter and fifteen inches in height - and is the largest of its kind ever created.

A record-breaking chef has created a piece of history - after baking what is thought to be the world's biggest-ever Victoria sponge cake.

The enormous sponge stands at five foot in diameter and fifteen inches in height and is the largest of its kind ever created.

Baked by Steve Oxford, from Dorset, the monster cake was created using six hundred eggs, fifty pounds of flour, fifty pounds of sugar - and a fork lift truck.

It took bakers 15 hours to make and cook the cake at the Royal Bath and West Show -  and needed a fork lift truck to lift it out of the oven.

Mr Oxford created the gigantic sponge to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the show held in Shepton Mallet, Somerset.

Spokesman Helouise D'Souza said: 'We wanted the cake to be as authentically Victorian as possible. The recipe is very close to one that would have been used 150 years ago.'
