Mechanics fixing an elderly driver’s car discovered the vehicle wasn’t running properly - because it was filled with peanuts.

A huge hoard of nuts - collected by a squirrel or mouse - was found stashed away under the bonnet of the Honda Civic 1.6 in Poole Keynes, in the Cotswolds.

The mystery animal had taken food from a Gloucestershire garden before scurrying inside the car’s engine and stashing the nuts in and around its parts.

The piles of nuts were only found when the Honda’s owner took her car to the garage because it wouldn’t go above 40mph.

When mechanics lifted the bonnet they discovered every nook and cranny was stuffed full of nuts from her bird feeder - including an entire carrier bag of treats in the air filter.

Garage owner David Evans ran a complete set of tests on the car before making the discovery.

He said: 'It was rammed solid with nuts. I've been doing this job for 18 years and I've never seen anything like it. I couldn't believe it.

‘(The animal) had been getting into the garage, where she parked the car, and had been climbing right inside the engine bay and squeezing himself into the air filter.’

Garage worker Helen Plaister, of DPE Autosport in Poole Keynes, Gloucestershire, said: 'The lady whose car it is had obviously been feeding the birds and a mouse or squirrel had stashed them in the car.

'It was quite fascinating.  When we took the air filter lid off we were just gobsmacked.'
