If you are annoyed by persistent urine odours in her bathroom despite regular cleaning, a savvy homemaker decided to ditch the traditional bleach approach and opted for an unconventional alternatives.

The source of the bothersome smell typically lurks around the toilet bowl or the floor right at its base. While bleach is known to eliminate germs, it's not necessarily the tackling the urine stench.

Frantic with her failed attempts using bleach, one person decided to give another household item, shaving foam, a go. Sharing her triumph on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, Krystal Healsey said: "OK so I used bleach first to get rid of the urine smell in my boys' bathroom but that didn't work."

Soon she could proudly exclaim her victory, she said: "Then I used shaving foam after hearing about it loads and it worked like a dream. The smell was gone quickly. It only took five minutes."

Krystal did throw in a word of caution though, as her magic ingredient accidentally landed on the baseboard behind her toilet, stripping some paint off, reports the Express. She said: "No big deal. I can fix it, but now I know that shaving foam removes paint from floors and carpets with ease."

To get cracking with this quick-fix hack, you need to spray the shaving foam onto the toilet bowl, on top, and around it anywhere that urine might seep into. You may also want to spritz around the floor's base of the toilet too.

Happily reporting that there's no need for any strenuous scrubbing involved, let the solution rest for a bit before wiping it clean.

Don't let the shaving foam linger too long, as the scent will vanish almost instantly. If it dries on your floor, you're in for a tough clean-up job, and it might even damage some types of flooring.

It may seem daunting to clean it off the floor, and indeed it would be if you were to attempt it with just a sponge and water. The key is to scoop up the foam.

A plastic cup can serve this purpose, or alternatively, a dustpan equipped with a squeegee is quite effective. Follow up with a swift wipe using a damp cloth, and you'll have it sorted in no time.

Shaving foam, a staple in many bathroom cabinets, is also affordable if you need to buy some. You can pick it up for £1 at Boots or £2 at Superdrug.

Admirers of Mrs Hinch have also revealed additional uses for shaving foam, such as cleaning mattresses, carpets, and mirrors. Louise Ogden shared her success story with before and after photos of her coffee-stained mattress, she said: "Worked on my mattress that was covered in coffee."

Rosie Owen has been a long-time advocate, she said: "Been using it for years on my carpets, furniture, inside ovens, stainless steel sinks, glass and if you spray on the bathroom mirror and buff off your mirror won't steam up."
