New 10.5km trails open at Crom Estate, Fermanagh

New trails stretching up to 10.5km around Crom Estate, Newtownbutler were recently unveiled.

The National Trust Fermanagh celebrated its official opening last weekend.

Through this project, previously inaccessible routes at Crom Estate are now open to connect with land and nature.

The new trails were funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) through their Environment Fund, and in partnership with The Lough Erne Landscape Partnership (LELP).

A community festival marked the event, complete with guided nature walks, live music from The Porter Bellys, arts and crafts sessions, and cultural activities.

Visitors flocked to the lough-side estate for a family day, where local businesses, musicians, and artists spotlighted the Fermanagh landscape.

Alongside stalls from community organisations, the day featured performances from Ulster-Scots and Irish dance groups, and a performance from the Aughakillymaude Mummers.

Julie Johnston, site manager at Crom Estate, National Trust, said: "This weekend was a great opportunity to celebrate the opening of our new trails with visitors.

"Crom was shining in the sunlight, and the great weather ensured a good turnout on both days, with some families coming along both days to explore more.

"We're so grateful to all the businesses, musicians, artists, and more who came along and ensured there was something for everyone."

Ashley Robinson, community connections and volunteer manager, said: “LELP were delighted to have worked in partnership with the National Trust to help deliver the creation of the new trails at Crom Estate, as well as the Celebrate Crom weekend.

“It was a fabulous opportunity for local community organisations and activity providers to showcase the wonderful local heritage and biodiversity which Fermanagh has to offer.

“A special thank you to the entire National Trust staff who saw this project successfully delivered, as well as the effort put into the overall organisation of the Celebrate Crom event.”
