Reality stars make great TV. Rows, diva behaviour and drama are the key ingredients for shows like TOWIE and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. But unfortunately, that kind of behaviour isn't so well appreciated in real life.
Some of our favourite stars on the small screen have landed themselves in serious trouble with the law. On occasion, their antics off-screen have even cost them their jobs on-screen. Here, we take a look at some of the unbelievable things reality stars have gotten up to when the cameras stopped rolling and what happened next.
1. Dan Osborne
Once upon a time, Dan was one of the most popular guys on TOWIE – but then he was axed in 2015 after secret tapes were released to the press of him threatening his ex, Megan Tomlin. On the recordings, he could be heard claiming he was going to stab her in the throat in front of their then 18-month-old son Teddy. Dan was arrested and eventually released by Essex Police without charge. He issued a public apology nonetheless but never returned to TOWIE.
2. Chloe Khan
Chloe's criminal record makes everyone else on this list look pretty tame in comparison – she's been arrested more than 140 times and has been given given dozens of ASBOs . In previous interviews, the Celebrity Big Brother star has spoke openly about selling drugs with an ex-boyfriend. She told The Mirror: "We needed money and got it whatever way we could. We were never into drugs but we used to sell fake weed and used to mash paracetamols up and sell it as coke." However, Chloe changed after becoming a mum to her daughter Destiny, 7.
3. Paris Hilton
Paris announced she was a "new woman" thanks to minister Marty Angelo after finishing a 45-day prison sentence back in 2007. But just five years later, she was in trouble again when police found her carrying cannabis at an airport. As if that wasn't enough, the Simple Life star was arrested a third time on suspicion of cocaine possession and was sentenced to one year of probation, 200 hours of community service, a $2,000 fine and the completion of a drug-abuse treatment programme.
4. Stephanie Pratt
Stephanie has been very open about her substance abuse issues over the years and has also spoken about her criminal past. In 2006, while working as a production assistant on the TV series Lost, she stole $1,300 worth of merchandise from a department store in Honolulu. The Made in Chelsea star has also been arrested twice; once on suspicion of drink driving and the other for driving over a police officer's foot!
5. Scotty T
It's no secret Scotty has one hell of a temper on him – we've lost count of the number of times he's trashed the Geordie Shore house in a fit of rage. But that's not why he's on the list. He's also been arrested twice.
He was taken to court in 2014 for allegedly punching Sam Hilson and last year, he was also cautioned for possession of a firearm, which he later apologised for. The caution will remain on his criminal record, meaning he will be denied entering some countries in the future, which could prove pretty inconvenient given his line of work.
6. Khloe Kardashian
Did you know that Khloe has been sent to jail? TWICE? She was arrested the first time when she just 15 after she stole her mum's Range Rover and casually took it out for a spin as if it were no big deal. She was then put behind bars again seven years later for driving under the influence. Luckily, she was released after three hours due to overcrowding.
7. Farrah Abraham
Channel 5 bosses had to cut the live transmission of Celebrity Big Brother's Bit on the Side for 10 minutes thanks to Farrah. When Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace threw a drink at her, the US star violently retaliated and threw a champagne glass which struck Vicki Michelle on the back of the head. The actress pressed charges. But this isn't the only time Farrah has been in trouble with the law. She was also arrested in 2013 for driving under the influence and pleaded guilty to the charge.
8. Spencer Matthews
We were all rooting for Spenny when we found out he'd signed up for I'm a Celebrity. But he was removed from the jungle after just one episode when show bosses found out he'd been taking steroid-based medication. He later claimed he "wasn't thinking properly" when he took the pills to bulk up for a celebrity boxing match. But it was too little too late as far as IAC was concerned.
9. Chris Clark
Before he was famous, Chris posted a string of racist messages on Twitter. One read: "Just can't get my head around someone flying a [plane] into a building. That's why I'm racist." When the tweets recently came to light (one of which contained the N-word), his representative blamed his age – even though he was 15 at the time.
10. Megan McKenna
Megan isn't a bad egg, but the TOWIE star has serious anger issues. And that's why we had to add her name to the list. Every show she's been on (with the exception of X Factor before she was famous), the reality star has had explosive arguments. On Ex on the Beach, one row even turned violent. But nothing compares to her complete meltdown in the Diary Room on Celebrity Big Brother. We're happy to report that she's since sought help for her anger issues and appears to be calming down.
