The 100 has finally returned for its long-awaited sixth season, and with it came a gut punch for fans.

In a dramatic twist, 'Sanctum' saw Miles Shaw (Jordan Bolger) pass through a radiated barrier, and while Clarke Griffin's (Eliza Taylor) attempts to save him proved futile. Shaw using his last breaths to say: "Tell Raven she deserves happiness".

While no doubt a shock for viewers, showrunner Jason Rothenberg explained that they decided to kill him off for a simple reason – actor Bolger got another job.

"The truth is, we lost the actor," he told TVLine. "Jordan got a job on another show. He's incredible, and I would have loved to keep him around, but we had a situation where we were losing him.

"The reality of production and people's careers and people getting other jobs factors into the equation. We then have to think, 'OK, how do we write a character off this show in an emotionally satisfying way?'

"It's not satisfying that he dies - it's tragic and heartbreaking - but there aren't a whole lot of options. It's not the kind of show where a character takes a job in Seattle and moves. There's pretty much only one way out."

Explaining why they decided to kill Shaw off in a dramatic way, Rothenberg revealed: "That's the truth of it. It sucks," and added that "the universe apparently doesn’t want Raven to be happy. She can't catch a break."

The 100 airs on The CW in the US. E4 airs the show in the UK.
