Lidl has confirmed the 12 locations in Cambridgeshire where they are hoping to open or relocate stores. The company is looking to increase its number of shops across the UK to more than 1,100.

The German discount chain is the sixth largest in the country, with this year marking its 30th since launch. It currently has 960 stores in the UK, including nine in Cambridgeshire.

The locations where new sites could open include Cambridge, Peterborough, Ely, Soham and St Ives. Towns such as March and St Neots were also highlighted for relocation.

The supermarket chain said it needs to open stores in prominent locations with easy access and strong pedestrian or traffic flow. They added that the locations should be available for freehold, leasehold or long leasehold and be between 18,000 and 26,500 square feet in size with more than 100 car parking spaces.

If it successfully finds a good location, it is willing to pay a finder's fee of 1.5 per cent of the total freehold purchase price or ten per cent of the first year's rent for leaseholds. This would equate to £22,500 for a completed £1.5 million site purchase.

Richard Taylor, Lidl GB Chief Development Officer, said: "As we celebrate our 30th year, our commitment to ensuring that all households across the country have access to high quality produce at affordable prices is stronger than ever. We’re planning to open hundreds of new Lidl stores but ultimately see no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential.

"This is why we’re continuing to invest in new locations whilst exploring innovative routes to expansion. As we look ahead, we’re excited to welcome even more new shoppers to our existing stores, as well as those we’re planning to open across the country in the coming months and years."

No sites have been finalised, but Lidl have earmarked a number of locations in various parts of the UK. This includes several others across the East of England.
