14-Year-Old Girl Charged with Shooting Mother Dead and Wounding Stepfather: Report

A 14-year-old girl has reportedly been arrested over the shooting of her mother and stepfather at their home in Mississippi.
Carly Madison Gregg is being tried in court as an adult after being accused of killing her mother Ashley Smylie, 40, and injuring her stepfather with a pistol, according to WLBT, WAPT and Vicksburg News.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office said that officers responded to a call of a shooting on Tuesday at around 5:07 p.m. in a neighborhood in Brandon, Miss., according to the Clarion Ledger,
When officers arrived on the scene, a man with a gunshot wound to the shoulder — later identified as Gregg's stepfather — told them that he found his wife dead when he had arrived home earlier that evening, per the outlet.

He added that his stepdaughter had been armed with a pistol and had shot him in the shoulder, but that he was able to wrestle the firearm away from her before she fled the scene across their backyard, according to the outlet, citing police.
A Mississippi Highway Patrol helicopter and additional officers were dispatched to the area and they eventually located Gregg near the property at around 5:30 p.m. added the Clarion Ledger. She was taken into custody without incident.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office said, per the Clarion Ledger, that the teen had been arrested on murder and attempted murder charges, and has been transported to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center.
The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

During a Wednesday hearing in juvenile court, a judge approved a request to charge her as an adult and Gregg was transferred to the Rankin County Adult Detention Center, according to WLBT and WAPT.

The teenager pleaded not guilty to the charges and her bond was set at $1,000,000, according to the outlets.
Smylie was identified as a math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, where her daughter also attended classes. Prior to that, she was a teacher at Warren Central High School, according to the Vicksburg News.
"You can't fathom those kinds of thoughts. You just wouldn't think the child would do anything like this," Laruen Martinez, a neighbor of the family, told WAPT of the incident. "It just feels like there's something missing. There's something wrong. It's like a level of caution that you don't think something like that would happen."
