18 million workers face being 'sacked' if they are off work sick next Thursday

After a dramatic win over Slovakia on Sunday evening, pubs across England are bracing themselves for 'Super Saturday'. A new survey from Bally Casino can reveal that up to 18 million England fans could miss work if England end up playing in the semi-final; due to be hosted on Wednesday, July 10.

When asked if they'd skip work due to an England knockout match, whether it's due to the game being played live or to have a day off the next day, 51% of those surveyed said "yes". This might spell trouble for employers across the UK; a potential semi-final would be followed by a Sunday evening final, leaving many English workers calling in sick or, as our survey suggests, "simply coming clean".

Overall, 62% of those respondents who would miss work for the Euros said their excuse would just “be honest and come clean” about missing an event of any description to watch an England knockout game. However, 11% admitted that food poisoning would be their go-to excuse.

Bizarrely, 8% would say that they “need some me-time”. When assessing age generations, Gen-X (1965-1980) is the most dedicated generation, with a whopping 57% saying that they would be likely to skip work to watch a match. Looking at domestic club breakdowns, Newcastle United fans are the most likely to miss work ahead of a potential England semi-final next week.

Overall, 29% of ‘Mags’ said that there would be “no chance” of them making it to work. Fulham fans are the second most likely (25%), while Everton fans are in third spot (21%). Women are officially more likely to miss a date night to watch England play.

Overall, 42% of women admitted that they'd happily skip it to support their team, compared to just 30% of men who said the same.
