Toddler died after falling through 'faulty window' of ninth floor flat

An 18-month-old boy who died falling from a block of flats in North London fell through a faulty window, it was claimed today.

Police were called to Stellar House in High Road, Tottenham, north London, at around 11am on Thursday, and found the boy, aged around 18 months, in a critical condition.

The London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and Air Ambulance attended and the child was taken to a north London hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Residents in the tower block said the boy had fallen after opening the window in the ninth-floor flat.

Danny Hunt, 31, who has lived on the ninth floor of the 19-floor council tower block in Tottenham, north London, for around a year, said: “I heard a woman just after 10 o’clock screaming hysterically.

"I heard someone shouting in the corridor outside in the hallway. I went out to see what's happening and one of my neighbours said to me a little boy jumped out of the window.

"I think his mother told me as well.“I looked out of a neighbour’s window and saw the baby lying in the canopy, just lying there.

"He had blood on him. He wasn't moving at all. He was lying on his side or on his back. He had blood from his neck, it was quite a lot.

"His mother was in shock. There were two other grown people there too, the girl's family.

"She couldn't say what she wanted to say. She was stone cold shocked. Someone did call the ambulance so I went back inside."

Haringey Council would not confirm whether they had received any complaints from residents about their windows when asked by Yahoo UK.

The toddler was said to have lived in the Haringey Council flat close to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with his mother, father and older sister.

Ms Dervik said the boy’s mother was “shocked and upset”, and added: “She was looking after the kids brilliantly, she cared about the children.”

A man who was visiting his aunt on the same estate on Thursday said there were “loads of police” in the area, and a man, believed to be the boy’s grandfather, was seen crying.

Formal identification and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The Metropolitan Police are treating the death as unexplained and continuing their inquiries.

A cordon remains in place at the scene and no arrests have been made.

Zina Etheridge, Haringey Council's cief executive, said: “We are aware of a tragic incident of a young child falling from height in Tottenham, and our deepest sympathies are with the family at this time.

"The police are currently investigating and it would be inappropriate for us to comment further until more is known.”
