2024 DGA Awards TV Nominations Have Fascinating Overlap with Current Emmys Contenders

Because the Primetime Emmys and the DGA Awards are operating on two different schedules (the former based on the traditional TV season, the latter based on calendar year), nominations often have little overlap. However, with the Director Guild of America (DGA) coincidentally releasing the TV nominations for its DGA Awards the same week as the postponed 75th Primetime Emmys, it’s become even more noticeable the ways in which the two awards bodies aligned and differed on shows from 2023.

For instance, DGA Awards favorite “Succession” once again dominates the Drama Series category, receiving four nominations (one less than the last time the show was eligible). While the guild was on the same page about honoring directors Andrij Parekh and Mark Mylod (a past winner) for their work on the fourth and final season of the HBO awards juggernaut, DGA voters opted to recognize Becky Martin and duo Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman for their “Succession” Season 4 episodes over Lorene Scafaria, the show’s third nominee in the Emmy category for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. The only other 2024 DGA Award nominee for Drama Series, “The Last of Us” director Peter Hoar, is another choice overlapping with the current Emmy nods, meaning the DGA skipped out on recognizing any Drama premieres that premiered after the 2022-2023 TV season.

As for Comedy Series, reigning DGA Award winner Bill Hader is nominated again for the series finale of his HBO series “Barry.” Also a current Emmy nominee, the former “Saturday Night Live” star is nominated against “Ted Lasso” directors Declan Lowney and Erica Dunton (the former a current Emmy nominee, the latter a snub), plus “The Bear” directors Christopher Storer and Ramy Youssef, nominated for their work on Season 2, which premiered in June. However, no DGA nominations for major TV awards contender “Beef,” which is was submitted into this category, but is up for two limited series Emmys for directing.

Departing even more from the current Primetime Emmy nominations, and giving the most insight into what TV shows and directors could be competitive in the next TV awards season are the DGA Award nominations for Limited Series. While Shawn Levy is nominated for directing the entirety of Netflix literary adaptation “All the Light We Cannot See,” Apple TV+ series “Lessons in Chemistry” received three nominations for Tara Miele, Millicent Shelton, and Sarah Adina Smith. Rounding out the category is “Daisy Jones and the Six” director Nzingha Stewart, who was Emmy-eligible, but not nominated, making the DGA Awards’ Limited Series category currently become the only one with more women than men nominated.

As for the DGA Award nominations for Documentary, the only nominee to have not made the 96th Oscars shortlist is D. Smith, director of “Kokomo City” (the portrait of four Black trans sex workers in Atlanta was working with little financial support.) “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” director Davis Guggenheim, who is coming off of two big Emmys wins for the project, is seen as the Documentary frontrunner this awards season, but 2023 IDA Documentary Award winners Mose Bwayo & Christopher Sharp (“Bobi Wine: The People’s President”) and 2023 Sundance Audience Award winner Madeleine Gavin (“Beyond Utopia”) are right there with him. And final DGA Award nominee, “20 Days in Mariupol” helmer Mstyslav Chernov, happens to currently be in contention for two Oscar categories: the aforementioned Best Documentary Feature, and the Ukraine selection for Best International Feature Film (another shortlist it made the cut for.)

The 2024 DGA Awards will take place February 10.
