The 32: Colombia petition labelled a 'nonsense' by Mick McCarthy

The petition signed by more than 280,000 people in Colombia calling for the last 16 game with England to be replayed has been dismissed by Mick McCarthy.

While England fans felt aggrieved with the behaviour of the Colombia players during the feisty game, those in South America felt that referee Mark Geiger cost them the game.

The petition argues that it was a ‘non-existent’ foul on Harry Kane that saw England awarded a penalty and that Carlos Bacca’s goal in extra-time should have stood.

Mick McCarthy has rubbished Colombia fans’ claims that the game should be replayedMcCarthy, though, was heavily critical of Colombia’s approach while appearing on Yahoo Sport’s daily World Cup show and labelled the petition as a ‘nonsense’.

“I’m not bothered if they make it 250 million, because they’re wrong,” he said.

“I saw the game and I’ve commented on Colombia twice and I really enjoyed them and the way they played, they were excellent. Against England I thought they were disgraceful and I was so disappointed in how they approached the game.

“I thought they were cynical from the start, only tried to stop England playing and upset them – try to get them sent off.

“The coach that barged Raheem Sterling should have had a dig in the nose – I have to be honest – but he was trying to get Raheem Sterling to do that. It should have been [one of] the coaches that did that and not Raheem, because he’d have got sent off.

“But I hated it. I really hated it.

“I wanted England to win anyway, but at the end of it I so wanted them to win because of how they performed.

“It’s a nonsense to say it was a fix, or the referee was bent – England deserved to win.”
