330 Pounds of Explosives Used to Demolish Unsafe Autobahn Bridge

Approximately 150 kilograms (330 pounds) of explosives were used to demolish the Rahmede viaduct in Ludenscheid, Germany, on May 7, which local news reported as the largest bridge ever to be blown up in the country.

Footage taken by Jan Schroth shows the 450-meter-long (1,476 foot) and 70-meter-tall (230 foot) Rahmede viaduct on the A45 autobahn being demolished from various angles, as a crowd is heard cheering on the explosion.

The demolition comes 17 months after the bridge was originally closed. During a routine check back in December 2021, experts found that the viaduct was no longer safe, according to reports.

DW News reported that "according to the Ministry of Transport, the demolition is a “milestone” on the road to building a new viaduct as soon as possible." Credit: Jan Schroth via Storyful
