45-year-old Shanaka Perera smashes unbeaten 203 in Midcom President’s Cup

It’s a feat no international cricketer has achieved yet but Shanaka Perera knows exactly how it feels to score a double century in a Twenty20 match, ranking it as his best knock of his career.

Perera, 45, was in blistering form with the bat for DHL Abu Dhabi in their Midcom President’s Cup encounter against Engsol in the capital earlier this month.

The opener struck a mammoth 21 sixes, including one maximum to reach the milestone, and 16 boundaries from just 61 deliveries to end unbeaten on 203, setting the platform for a massive 359-run victory.

Big totals is a habit for Perera. Two years ago, he crossed the 150-run mark on several occasions but could not reach that milestone, while he hit a 200 in a 50-over game in his college days.

“It’s a pretty amazing and wonderful to score a 200,” said Perera. “It certainly wasn’t easy and it required a lot of determination.

“I had scored between 150-170 runs but always got out so it’s nice to reach this milestone. It’s definitely one I will remember for a long time.”

Having played in the capital for almost 15 years, Perera put his knowledge of the conditions to great use and was just keen to get his team off to a good start.

“I was taking it over by over,” he said. “We felt we could score big runs before the game and we lived up to that expectations.”

He added: “I’ve played more than 35 years of cricket here in the UAE and Sri Lanka. I would say this is the biggest achievement in my cricket life. No matter what team you score against at whatever level, scoring 200 runs in a Twenty20 match is a big achievement.”
