4th grader wins $10K scholarship

Mar. 13—Hunter Saucier, Walker County 4-Her, recently won a $10,000 scholarship at the San Antonio Junior Ag Mechanics Show.

The Huntsville Independent School District Stewart Elementary student is in 4th Grade and only 9 years old. His project was Welding Fabrication Table where he took 1st in Class for Specialized Tables & Workstations. The Division Champion for Shop Equipment and Resource Recovery prize package included a buckle, banner, and numerous tools. Not just the $10,000 scholarship.

Saucier attended the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo on Feb, 23-24, to compete in the Junior Ag Mechanics Show. This is his second year in Walker County 4-H and building AG Mech projects. The show had a total of 786 projects and 1,538 exhibitors from across the state. Saucier won his class, which had 26 projects total, and his division, which had 86 projects total. He was the youngest exhibitor to win a division and scholarship at this year's show.

His parents, Jennifer and Ryan Saucier, said Hunter is an exceptional talent with a bright future. He is also a member of the Stewart Robotics team and a Cub Scout with Pack 114.

"Hunter started learning to weld at the age of 6 with his dad and has been hooked ever since. He is a very hard-working young man with a very analytical mind," said mom Jennifer.

She added that Hunter loves a challenge and trying to figure out how things work, adding he wants to be an astronaut one day.

"We are so proud of the time and hard work he has put into this project. Hunter wants to keep all of the equipment he builds to show so that by the time he graduates high school he has a fully equipped shop," said Jennifer.
