Shopping for a engagement ring can be anything but straightforward. There's the pressure of finding a ring you'll want to wear for the rest of your life, alongside the added stress of getting the best ring for your budget and ensuring it feels tailored to your taste.

But finding the perfect engagement ring should also be fun. That's why we consulted an expert: London jeweller Jessica McCormack.

She says: 'I think people are increasingly looking for something less traditional and more indicative of their own tastes, which I love. Half the fun is trying on different styles, even if they're wildly out of your comfort zone.'

'Jewellery is not just a collection of beautiful things,' she adds, 'it's also a treasure map of memories to be handed down to the next generation.'

Here, Jessica shares all you need to know before buying an engagement ring. Consider this your guide to finding the design of your dreams.

TRUST YOUR GUT

You first reaction is often the right one; don't worry about what anyone else thinks, you're the one who's going to wear the ring.

BE BRAVE

Making small tweaks to a traditional design is the perfect way to add your personality into the ring. Think about setting something like an emerald cut east-west (horizontal rather than vertical) or go for blackened gold instead of white.

WHEN BUYING A DIAMOND...

Or any stone, it's about love not maths. It's like buying a piece of art, so forget certificates and choose a stone that speaks to you.

DON'T WORRY ABOUT SIZE

A small stone can be more beautiful than a larger one that lacks the same character. Wanted something bigger? That's what a party jacket is for!

BALANCE YOUR BUDGET...

Whatever that might be. Make sure the don't blow the lot on just the stone and leave nothing for the design, setting a beautiful rock in a less-than-inspiring ring.
