A lone wolf NYPD officer called John McClane (Bruce Willis) becomes trapped in an office block. He must fight his way through an army of German terrorists led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman), who want to rob a huge multinational corporation.

With his trademark catchphrase, "Yippee ki-yay, motherf**ker," he beats the bad guys and lives to fight another day (in Die Hard 2, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard and A Good Day to Die Hard).

Sound familiar? It should do, because it's the basic plot of not only Die Hard, but a horde of pretenders.

1. Under Siege – aka Die Hard on a Boat

A lone wolf ex-Navy SEAL turned ship's cook called Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal) becomes trapped on a boat. He must fight his way through an army of mercenaries led by a former CIA operative who wants to sell stolen Tomahawk missiles.

With his trademark catchphrase, "I'm just a cook," Ryback beats the bad guys and lives to fight another day (in Under Siege 2: Dark Territory).

2. Under Siege 2: Dark Territory – aka Die Hard on a Train

A lone wolf ex-Navy SEAL turned chef called Casey Ryback (Steven Seagal) becomes trapped on a train. He must fight his way through an army of mercenaries led by a former US government hacker who wants to take control of a top-secret military satellite particle weapon.

With his new trademark catchphrase, "Nobody beats me in the kitchen," Ryback beats the bad guys and lives to fight another day.

3. Speed – aka Die Hard on a Bus

A lone wolf Los Angeles SWAT officer called Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) becomes trapped on a bus rigged to explode. He must fight his way along the LA freeway at 50mph to stop a disgruntled former bomb squad officer who wants a ransom.

With his trademark catchphrase, "There's a bomb on this bus," Traven beats the bad guys and lives to fight another day (but not in Speed 2: Cruise Control).

4. White House Down – aka Die Hard in the White House

A lone wolf United States Capitol Police officer called John Cale (Channing Tatum) and a lone wolf President of the United States called James William Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) become trapped in the White House. They must fight their way through an army of mercenaries led by the retiring head of the Presidential Detail and evil Vice President who want to take over the presidency.

With their trademark kick-ass double act, they beat the bad guys and live to fight another day.

5. Air Force One – aka Die Hard on a Plane

A lone wolf President of the United States called James Marshall (Harrison Ford) becomes trapped on his own plane. He must fight his way through an army of Russian terrorists led by Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman), who want a former Kazakhstani dictator released.

With his trademark catchphrase, "Get off my plane," President Marshall beats the bad guys and lives to fight another day.

6. Passenger 57 – aka Die Hard on a Plane (Again)

A lone wolf cop turned airline security expert called John Cutter (Wesley Snipes), haunted by the death of his wife, becomes trapped on a plane. He must fight his way through an army of terrorists led by Charles Rane (Bruce Payne), aka the 'Rane of Terror', an 'international psychopath terrorist' who wants to escape the US authorities.

With his trademark catchphrase, "Always bet on black," Cutter beats the bad guys and lives to fight another day.

7. Sudden Death – aka Die Hard in a Hockey Arena

A lone wolf former Pittsburgh firefighter called Darren McCord (Jean-Claude Van Damme), who has been demoted to working as both a fire marshal and security guard, becomes trapped in the Pittsburgh Civic Arena. He must fight his way through an army of terrorists led by a disgraced CIA operative who want to extort hundreds of millions of dollars in ransom.

With his trademark catchphrase, "I'm gonna try to stop you," he beats the bad guys and lives to fight another day.

8. Masterminds – aka Die Hard in a School

A lone wolf teenage brat and cyber criminal called Oswald 'Ozzie' Paxton (Mad Men's Vincent Kartheiser) becomes trapped in his stepsister's private school. He must fight his way through an army of evil security guards led by Bentley (a moustachioed Patrick Stewart), who want to extort the student's rich parents.

With his trademark catchphrase, "I'm always in trouble," (not to mention, "I'm telling you, we've got a Die Hard situation here") Ozzie beats the bad guys and lives to fight another day.
