It's a stunning part of the North Yorkshire coast and many Teessiders love a visit, especially for a pint or two!

But if you are not familiar with Whitby, you might be after a helping hand. With some many drinking spots to choose from, you might find it hard to decide where to head.

So here's a handy guide to some of the pubs and bars you can visit the next time you're in Whitby.

Abbey Wharf

Offering great views over the harbour from the town's east side, this bar and fish restaurant has a wide selection of traditional beers, wines and spirits.

The bar also stocks a selection of world beers, unusual spirits, sparkling wines and champagnes. It's also a regular host to live music entertainment.

Located on the cobbled streets at the foot of Whitby Abbey, it boasts a well-stocked wine cellar, many of which are available by the glass.

The "bistro-style" restaurant includes many British classics and it also offers hotel rooms in the street that is believed to have been part of the inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. The menu has an emphasis on fresh seafood and uses locally sourced ingredients.

The Angel Hotel - (Wetherspoon)

It's undoubtedly one the busiest places in the resort.

Found on New Quay Road in the town centre, the Angel Hotel (Whitby's Wetherspoon's) is often packed out on busy summer days. Formerly a posting and commercial house in the 1800s, this long-standing local landmark is a popular spot for a pint.

It offers all sorts of lager, beer and spirits, plus an outdoor area and an upper floor overlooking the harbour. The pub also serves food and has a hotel upstairs.

The Whitby Way

You'll find a selection of cask ales and a handful of the most unique premium gins in this family friendly pub in the heart of Whitby.

The food menu is available from noon everyday and includes build your own burgers and stone baked pizzas. Live music and sport form the entertainment.

The Dolphin

Situated right next to the town's swing bridge and offering great views out over the harbour, The Dolphin is a popular spot for punters.

Its outdoor seating area is often bursting with customers on hot days and big events like Goth Weekend, as they watch the famous bridge open and close to let vessels in and out of the town.

The bar stocks a selection of local and regional ales, both craft and cask, a wide wine range and a Gin Palace. Live music can also be enjoyed on Tuesdays and weekends, and food is available.

Harry's Bar

A stone's throw from the world-famous Magpie Cafe, Harry's offers what it calls "a food lover's paradise".

Founded in 2008, the establishment boasts a cafe, restaurant and cocktail bar in the heart of Whitby. The bar include cocktails, fine champagne, wines, beers and spirits from around the world. A trained barrista also serves the coffee.

An outside seating area has views across the harbour, as do the hotel rooms upstairs.

The Penny Hedge

Just out of town, Marston's pub, the Penny Hedge has plenty of parking, plus overnight accomodation.

Behind the bar they stock well-kept real ales, premium draught products, exciting cocktails, specially-chosen wines, spirits and soft drinks. Flame-roasted rotisserie chicken is the bedrock of the menu, and is supported by a range of steaks, traditional British dishes and flavoursome food from around the world.

The centre of Whitby is about a five minute drive away.

Resolution

Situated just up the hill, a short walk from the town centre, the Resolution is a favoured spot for a pint and something to eat - and they even serve parmos.

Ales stocked on the bar include Black Sheep, Hobgoblin and Wainwright.

A large fish tank forms an attractive centre piece between the bar and the restaurant area, which offers a variety of options.

The George Hotel

You'll find a range of wines and spirits, hand-pulled ale, a bar that can be hired for private functions, hot beverages and live sport in this town centre pub.

Upstairs offers accommodation spread across four floors.

It's located around a 30 second walk from the town's train station.
