Holby City spoilers follow from tonight's (August 11) episode.

It's a sad day for Holby City fans, as the show is now going off air until the autumn. Tonight's episode marked the moment that Holby ran out of new editions to broadcast, due to the UK lockdown disrupting filming schedules.

Like last time, Holby bosses have left us on a whopper of a cliffhanger as Essie tragically passed away, Guy's return stint came to a dramatic conclusion, and Max was left contemplating her future.

Here are the nine biggest questions we've been left with until the autumn:

1. What now for Sacha?

Have you dried your eyes yet? Holby City has once again left us with a heartbreaking ending as Essie tragically passed away on her wedding day.

Essie has been on borrowed time for the past few weeks after learning that her cancer was terminal but she decided to make the most of the time she had left by bringing her nuptials forward.

Sacha was delighted by Essie's plans, but his elation soon turned to devastation when she died on the way to the ceremony.

Sacha was seen saying a heartbreaking final goodbye to his beloved Essie in the closing moments of Tuesday's finale episode, but what does the future hold for him now?

2. Is Ric going to be alright?

As if there was ever really any doubt, but Ric defied the odds and pulled through his life or death surgery again tonight.

Proving that he really is the cat with nine lives, Ric even managed to ride the turbulent storm caused by Guy Self's alarming attempts to take matters into his own hands.

Sure enough, Ric has lived to tell the tale, but will he be able to forgive Max when he learns how close he came to meeting his maker?

3. Will there be consequences for Max?

The closing moments of tonight's episode hinted at the next big chapter for Holby boss Max McGerry, who'll be taking centre stage when the show returns.

Horrified at what happened under her watch, Max was seen telling her son Louis how she blames herself for Ric's near-miss in surgery – and it looks like she's not the only one who feels that way.

We already know that Ric will be at odds with Max when Holby returns later in the year, having lost all faith in her ability to manage the hospital. Oh dear.

4. Is this the last we've seen of Guy?

We knew it wouldn't be without its dramas, but Guy's return stint reached a cataclysmic climax tonight when he attempted surgery on Ric while under the influence of alcohol.

Although Guy did manage to get Ric out of the woods, his shocking actions were the final straw for his furious ex-partner Max, who insisted that she would have to inform the board of the incident.

Accepting defeat, Guy bowed out under a cloud, and we can confirm that is the last we'll see of him – for the time being anyway.

"I'm back for about a dozen episodes," John Michie – who plays Guy – said upon his return earlier in the year. "I was filming from December for about three months. It's been great. I've loved it. "

5. Is Cameron still obsessed with Chloe?

Cameron's behaviour took another concerning turn tonight, and it looks like Nicky is unwittingly carving her way into becoming his latest fixation. But is he still infatuated with Chloe? It looks like it.

As we had already revealed, Cameron rejected Nicky after their passionate on-shift encounter, leaving her confused by his fickle intentions.

Cameron then turned his attention back to Chloe, who is the true object of his affections – but was left embarrassed when she publicly turned him down. Proving himself to be quite the love rat, Cameron went crawling back to Nicky...

6. Is Nicky in danger?

Worryingly, Nicky fell straight back into Cameron's arms, but there are some hints that the story could be about to take a worrying turn.

Having complimented Chloe's red lipstick earlier on, Cameron suggested, in a post-coital chat, that Nicky start wearing the same. She agreed, but is Nicky walking into a dangerous trap here?

7. Are Louis's romance dreams over?

Poor Louis was left out in the cold tonight, after finally plucking up the courage to ask Nicky on a date.

Having spent the past few weeks pining after her, Louis decided to take the plunge with Nicky, and for a short while, it looked like he was in luck.

Unfortunately, Cameron's conniving ways meant that Nicky was soon turning Louis down. But is that really the end of #Loucky (or, Nicouis)? We hope not.

8. Are Ange and Fletch on the rocks?

They've had a fairly solid run so far (by Holby standards, anyway), but could Ange and Fletch be running into problems?

Ange has been a pillar of support to Fletch throughout his cancer battle, but tension appeared to be bubbling underneath the couple's seemingly happy exterior tonight.

Fletch grew irritated with Ange's disparaging attitude towards Essie and Sacha's wedding, suggesting that cracks could be starting to show.

Essie's death is also likely to have a life-changing impact on Fletch, but could their shared ordeal prompt him to re-evaluate what he wants his future to look like?

9. When will Holby be back?

It's the all-important question, and sadly, we don't have a definitive answer right now. The good news, however, is that production at Holby City is back up and running, with the cast currently filming a special return episode which will explore how the hospital copes with the coronavirus pandemic.

Given that filming only resumed last month, fans should expect to see Holby back on screens later in the autumn. So, watch this space for a return date.
